For the third year running Egypt have won the African Cup of Nations. Well I guess it’s not three consecutive years because it is a bi-annual tournament, but they have won it the past three times. Egypt, a country who has a lot of players in their domestic league (many in Europe as well but not as much as say the Ivory Coast), a league that also dominates African football. Too bad this dominant African team didn’t even make it to the World Cup this year as they were eliminated in the playoffs by Algeria, who were in turn eliminated in the semis of the ANC by Egypt who exacted a little bit of revenge.
Ghana in the final? Sure they had a decent tourny despit losing to three goals scored by a 10 man Ivory Coast team who somehow managed to get themselves eliminated by Algeria as well. *Algeria ended up losing in the thrid place match to Nigeria, a team who should be waaaaaaaay better than they are. Speaking of Nigeria underperforming, what is going to happen to this “golden generation” of Ivory Coast players? Will then pull a Portugal and win nothing? With Drogba turning 32, I would say yes. What ever happened to Cameroon’s dominance? Song and Eto’o anyone?
Either way, since the footy blog is being dominated by Manchester United’s great displays over their rivals (3-1 over Arsenal yesterday!) I had to make mention of this here. Watch the highlights to the ANC final below.
