I went out on Saturday to see this burgeoning London band called Is Tropical (strange name I am aware), as they were playing at Cargo just off of Old Street. Rivington to be exact. I call Cargo in advance to ask what time the music would be starting so that I know what time to show up and so on, because Chevonne would be tagging along and did not feel well all weeend so I didn’t want to make her stand around too much. I was kindly told around 10:00pm, so we arrived at 10 on the dot.
A band was setting up when we arrived but it was not Is Tropical, it turned out to be another one called The Detachments, so we stuck around and watched them figuring it would be some kind of opening act. Well The Detachments suck ass, they are kind of this ’80s/The Cure/brutal singer/trying to hard to have catchy hooks band that I just thought were nonsense. Maybe they’re better on record, but that singer sucked live and could not pull off the Ian Curtis thing it seemed like he was trying. So after standing through that shite, a DJ started playing some broken electronic music so we decided to dance for a bit to kill the time. I had jackets hanging off of me so it was less so dancing and more-so just being dumb.
This went on for a while, so I eventually inquired about when Is Tropical would be taking the stage, and i was told they played at 9:00….What a waste of a night. Since hearing their first single “When O’ When” I have been hooked in. The song starts off kind of slow and shanty-town pirate ship like, but then picksup into this drum/bass thriller. I keep singing it to myself whenever I’m not listening to it. They do wear stupid masks it’s true, but the video for the song is also impeccably incredulous! (just throwing adjectives together and that is what all the top music critics do right?) Well enough talk from me, just watch it for yourself here:
Amazing right? So that’s what I missed. Drag. They play a few more times in London this month before embarking on a trip around England, so if I do catch them I’ll let you know how it goes.
I spent the rest of the night we just discussed watching Akiko and Simon rock out in their latest video for Death of You.
