The Moving Picture

By Jared Mercer

I love the movies, but they took our words. Movies can be the highest form of art there is but for some reason the public loves to cheapen them. People will say:

Projector of good faith

Projector of good faith

“Oh I went to see that movie because the action was good, I didn’t want to have to think.” This is just an example (see the movie Twilight, worst movie ever made…very successful though, it’s becoming a trilogy and now the books are selling more than they did before).

Now who would read a book or seek out some other form of storytelling for some shit plot?  Why does the cinema of all things have to be cheapened? *cheapened as in bad, style over substance, not cheaper in cost. Often films that cost hundreds of millions turn out to be really lame because they are all about see visuals and no story, ie. Transformers.

I know it is because of the visuals people will go see Spider Man 7 or whatever, just because they are visually amazing but…stupid.  Granted, but then there are movies like Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, which are very cheap and simple but are very great, entertaining, hard hitting, emotional films.  So the problem is, great movies will be subject to criticism from the general public because they force you to think while watching, or to possibly feel a human emotion. People may say that if they wanted to do that they would read a book or something.  Once again, ridiculous. I feel bad for our picture shows.

So next time you go to a movie that you know is stupid (and avoid the good movie, which in turn makes it have lower ticket sales than the shit film and in turn making it more difficult for good films of this kind to be funded and made), maybe you should think: I should go fuck myself.

Yea they don’t have to be independent I guess because often you have to live in a city like London to get such films. If you live in Swift Current, SK or Lagos or whatever it will obviously be more difficult. I guess I would just ask for money to be spent on the smart choice, not the most “indie”. Just so movies like that can be supported. I appreciate your effort :)
